Windows 10 & 8: Install Active Directory Users and Computers

If you’re an administrator for Windows administrator using an Microsoft Windows 10 or 8 PC, you may need install Active Directory Users and Computers in addition to additional Active Directory applications. These tools aren’t installed by default and here’s the way to install these tools.

Be aware that you may Install Remote Server Administration Tools (SAP) for Windows 10 only on the complete version of Windows Professional or Windows Enterprise. If you don’t, you’ll receive an “This update does not qualify for your computer.” message when you attempt installing it.

Windows 10 Version 1809 and Higher

In Windows 10 1809, RSAT is no longer available via the installer supplied by Microsoft The software has been made available to users as an option. Follow the steps below to set it up.

1. Click the Start button, right-click and select “Settings” > “Apps” > “Manage optional features” > “Add feature”.
2. Select ” RSAT: Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Tools“.
3. Choose ” Install” Then wait until Windows downloads and installs this feature. It will eventually show as an option in ” Start” > ” Windows Administrative Tools“.

Windows 8 and Windows 10 Version 1803 or Lower

1. Install and download one of these programs, based on the version of Windows:
   • Remote Server Administrator Tools For Windows 10
   • Remote Server Administrator Tools For Windows 8
   • Remote Server Administrator Tools For Windows 8.1
2. In Windows 8 as well as older versions of Windows 10 Right-click the Start button, then select “Control Panel” > “Programs” > “Programs and Features” > “Turn Windows features on or off”.
3. Scroll down, and then extend and expand the ” Remote Server Administration Tools” section.
4. Expand ” Role Administration Tools“.
5. Expand ” AD DS and AD LDS Tools“.
6. Check the box ” AD DS Tools” is selected and then click ” OK“.
7. There should be the option of ” Administrative Tools” in the menu bar at start. There, you can select one from the Active Directory tools. For windows 10 that is newer than Windows 10, (or at the very least my version), select the ” Start” button, then enter ” active directory” and it will appear.
